What to Actually Feed Your Vegetable Plants (And When to Change It)

There's a specific failure that shows up in almost every beginner vegetable garden: a tomato or brinjal plant that looks magnificent — tall, dark green, thick with leaves — and produces two fruits all season.

That plant isn't underfed. It's fed the wrong thing at the wrong time.

The three numbers, in plain terms

Every fertiliser bag carries three numbers — N-P-K. You only need to remember what each one builds:

  • N (Nitrogen) builds leaves. Green, leafy, fast growth.
  • P (Phosphorus) builds roots and flowers. No flowers, no fruit.
  • K (Potassium) builds overall toughness — fruit quality, disease resistance, water regulation.

The magnificent-plant-no-fruit problem is simply too much N for too long. Nitrogen tells the plant "keep making leaves," so it does, indefinitely, at the expense of flowering.

The stage switch nobody tells beginners about

This is the single most useful thing in this article. Fruiting vegetables need two different feeding phases:

Phase 1 — from seedling until first flower buds: higher nitrogen. You want the plant to build a strong leafy frame and root system. Vermicompost, diluted cow manure, or a balanced feed works fine here.

Phase 2 — from first flower buds through harvest: drop the nitrogen sharply, raise potassium. The plant now needs to pour resources into flowers and fruit, not more foliage.

Most people never make the switch. They feed the same thing in month four that they fed in week two, and the plant keeps doing what nitrogen tells it to do.

Why container plants need feeding far more often

Every time you water a pot and water runs out the bottom, dissolved nutrients leave with it. This is called leaching, and it's why a plant in a container is on a completely different feeding schedule from the same plant in the ground.

A ground bed holds a nutrient reserve. A 12-inch pot, watered daily in summer, is effectively being rinsed out daily. Expect to feed containers roughly every two to three weeks during active growth — the exact interval depends on pot size and how hard you're watering.

Reading deficiency from the leaves

The plant tells you what it's short of, if you know where to look. The key detail most guides omit: which leaves are affected matters as much as the symptom.

  • Older, lower leaves yellowing first, moving upward — nitrogen shortage. Nitrogen is mobile inside the plant, so it gets pulled out of old leaves to feed new growth.
  • Purple or reddish tinge on stems and leaf undersides, stunted growth — phosphorus shortage. Common in cold soil, when uptake slows even if P is present.
  • Brown, scorched-looking leaf edges while leaf centres stay green — potassium shortage.
  • New top leaves yellow while old leaves stay green — this is not nitrogen. It's usually iron, and often caused by soil pH being too high rather than iron being absent.

Organic sources, and what each is actually for

  • Vermicompost — balanced, gentle, all-purpose. Best default.
  • Cow manure (well-rotted) — nitrogen-leaning. Must be properly composted; fresh manure will burn roots.
  • Bone meal — phosphorus. Work into soil at planting or before flowering.
  • Wood ash — potassium. Use sparingly, it raises soil pH significantly.
  • Mustard cake — high nitrogen, fast-acting once soaked and diluted. Strong; dilute well.
  • Neem cake — nitrogen plus genuine suppression of soil pests and nematodes. Useful double duty.

The over-feeding mistake

More is not better, and this is where enthusiasm does real damage.

Organic amendments are far more forgiving here than synthetic NPK. It's genuinely difficult to burn a plant with vermicompost. It's very easy with a mis-measured chemical feed.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I fertilise vegetables in pots?

Roughly every 2-3 weeks during active growth, because frequent watering leaches nutrients out of containers far faster than from garden beds. Reduce or stop during monsoon and in winter dormancy when growth slows.

Can I use the same fertiliser for all my vegetables?

You can, but you'll get worse results from fruiting plants. Leafy vegetables want steady nitrogen throughout. Fruiting vegetables like tomato and brinjal need nitrogen early, then a shift toward potassium once flowering starts — otherwise you get lush foliage and little fruit.

Is chemical fertiliser bad for vegetables I'm going to eat?

Used at the correct dose, it isn't unsafe. The practical arguments for organic amendments are that they're far harder to overdose, they improve soil structure over time, and they don't build up salts in container soil the way repeated synthetic feeding does.

My plant has lots of leaves but no flowers. What's wrong?

Almost always excess nitrogen. Stop nitrogen-heavy feeding entirely and switch to a potassium-leaning source. It typically takes a few weeks for the plant to redirect into flowering.
