Ask most people when plants are most at risk in India and they'll say peak summer. In container gardens, it's monsoon — and by a wide margin.
Summer kills plants slowly and visibly; you can see wilting and respond. Monsoon kills them invisibly, from the roots up, while everything above the soil still looks fine. By the time the plant droops, the roots are already gone.
What monsoon actually does to a potted plant
Four things happen at once, and they compound:
- Waterlogging. Soil pores that should hold air fill with water. Roots need oxygen — they suffocate and begin to rot.
- Light collapse. Overcast weeks mean a fraction of normal sunlight. Plants slow right down and can't use the water they're sitting in.
- Fungal explosion. Warm, wet, still air is ideal for fungal disease. Leaf spot, damping off, and root rot all spike.
- Nutrient leaching. Constant water through the pot flushes nutrients out fast.
Note how three of those four are made worse by more water.
Where to actually move your pots
Where to put the pot in monsoon
Under partial cover, not full cover. A balcony overhang, pergola, or shade net edge works well. What you want is protection from direct downpour while still getting ambient light. Moving plants fully indoors or into a dark corner trades a water problem for a light-starvation problem, and light is already scarce.
Away from the roof drip line. This is the placement error I see most often. The narrow band where water sheets off a roof edge or awning delivers a concentrated, high-velocity stream — it batters foliage, compacts and erodes soil, and floods a pot far faster than open rain. A pot in open rain is often better off than a pot under an edge.
Elevated off the ground. Pots sitting flat on a terrace or balcony floor during monsoon are sitting in standing water, and the drainage holes at the bottom are effectively sealed. Raise them on bricks, pot feet, a wooden slat, anything with a couple of centimetres of clearance. This single change prevents a lot of root rot.
Spaced apart, not clustered. People instinctively huddle pots together under whatever shelter exists. That kills airflow, and stagnant humid air between crowded leaves is exactly what fungal disease needs. Give them gaps.
On a terrace, check the terrace's own drainage first. If your terrace pools water in one corner during heavy rain, don't put plants there regardless of how good the light is.

Which plants need moving, and which don't
Not everything needs relocating, and moving heavy pots unnecessarily is wasted effort.
Move these first — they rot fastest:
- Succulents and cacti (they will not survive sustained wet)
- Herbs with soft stems — basil, mint in small pots
- Anything in a pot you already suspected of draining poorly
- Seedlings and fresh cuttings
These mostly cope in open rain:
- Established leafy greens — palak, methi, amaranth genuinely enjoy monsoon
- Mature, deep-rooted plants in large well-draining containers
- Ground-planted vegetables in beds that drain properly
What monsoon is genuinely good for
It isn't all defensive. Humidity and moderate temperatures make this the easiest time of year for propagation — stem cuttings root faster and more reliably in monsoon than any other season. If you've been meaning to multiply a plant, this is the window.
Leafy greens also thrive. And it's a sound time to build or repair beds, refresh soil mixes, and prepare for the post-monsoon planting season, which is the best growing window of the Indian year.
Feeding during monsoon
Cut it back sharply, don't stop entirely. Growth is slow because of low light, so demand is low — but leaching is high, so what's there washes away. A light dose of a gentle organic amendment once through the season is sensible. Heavy feeding in low light produces weak, sappy growth that fungal disease attacks readily.

Should I stop watering my plants completely during monsoon?
No — check before each watering rather than following a fixed rule. Plants under a full overhang may get no rain at all and still need regular watering, while pots in open rain may need none for weeks. Test the soil 2-3 cm down every time.
How do I know if my plant has root rot from monsoon?
Yellowing lower leaves, wilting despite wet soil, and a sour smell from the soil are the main signs. Confirm by easing the plant out: healthy roots are firm and pale, rotted roots are brown, mushy, and pull apart easily.
Can I keep vegetable plants indoors during monsoon?
Only briefly, and only right beside a bright window. Indoor light levels are far lower than most people assume, and monsoon light is already reduced — a fruiting vegetable indoors for weeks will stretch, weaken, and stop producing. Partial outdoor cover is almost always better.
Is it worth planting anything new during monsoon?
Leafy greens and stem cuttings, yes — both do unusually well in monsoon humidity. Direct-sowing seeds outdoors is risky since heavy rain washes them out and damping-off disease is rife; start seeds under cover instead.
