Why Your Tomatoes and Brinjals Turn Black at the Bottom (And How to Actually Stop It)

You watch a tomato set fruit, you get excited, and then within a week the bottom of it goes dark, sunken, and leathery. It never grows to full size. It happens again on the next fruit, and the next.

This is blossom end rot, and almost everything you'll read about it online gives you the wrong fix.

It's not a disease, a fungus, or a pest

The first thing to understand is that no spray will fix this. Blossom end rot is a physiological disorder — the plant itself failed to deliver enough calcium to the developing fruit while it was forming. There's no organism to kill, which is why people waste money on fungicides and neem sprays that do nothing for it.

You can identify it confidently by where the damage is. Blossom end rot always appears at the blossom end — the bottom of the fruit, opposite the stem. It starts as a small water-soaked spot, then turns brown to black, sunken, and dry-leathery. If the dark patch is on the side, near the stem, or fuzzy/mouldy, you're looking at something else entirely (usually sunscald or an actual fungal issue).

Why "add calcium" is usually the wrong advice

Here's the part most articles get wrong. Your soil almost certainly has enough calcium already. Indian garden soil is rarely calcium-deficient — and if you've added compost, bone meal, or any general-purpose fertiliser, you've added more.

The problem isn't how much calcium is in the soil. It's that calcium can only travel into the fruit dissolved in water, moving up through the plant with the water it drinks. If water delivery to the roots is inconsistent, calcium delivery is inconsistent — and the fastest-growing tissue, which is the tip of a young fruit, is the first thing to get starved.

So the real cause, in the overwhelming majority of cases, is irregular watering.

Why this hits Indian container gardens so hard

This is where our conditions genuinely differ from the US/UK advice you'll find online.

In the weeks before monsoon, a pot on an exposed terrace or balcony can go from properly moist to bone dry in a single day. Then monsoon arrives and the same pot is waterlogged for a week. That swing — parched, flooded, parched — is precisely the condition that produces blossom end rot. Temperate gardens with steady rainfall rarely see it this severely.

What actually fixes it

  1. Make watering consistent, not just frequent.

    The goal is soil that stays evenly moist — never fully dry, never swampy. In peak summer that may mean watering both morning and evening for containers. Poke a finger 2-3 cm into the soil; if it's dry at that depth, you've already waited too long.

  2. Mulch. This is the single highest-impact fix.

    A 2-3 cm layer of dry leaves, straw, cocopeat, or even coconut husk on the soil surface dramatically slows evaporation and flattens out those moisture swings. Most people skip this step and then wonder why their watering never feels like enough.

  3. Ease off nitrogen-heavy fertiliser while fruits are setting.

    Excess nitrogen pushes fast leafy growth, and that surge of new foliage competes with developing fruit for the calcium moving up the plant. If you're feeding a fruiting plant with something high-nitrogen every week, that's working against you.

  4. Stop disturbing the roots.

    Digging or hoeing close to the base damages the fine feeder roots doing the actual water uptake. Weed by hand near the plant.

  5. Remove the affected fruits.

    They will not recover — the damage is permanent. Picking them off redirects the plant's energy into the fruits that still have a chance.

When calcium supplements are worth it

There's a narrow case where adding calcium genuinely helps: if your soil is actually deficient, which is most likely in pots you've been reusing for years with the same tired mix, never refreshed. If you've fixed the watering and mulched properly and it's still happening across a whole season, that's the signal.

If so, use a soil amendment worked into the mix — gypsum or bone meal — rather than a foliar calcium spray. Sprayed calcium mostly doesn't reach the fruit; calcium moves upward with water flow, and leaves aren't a route into a developing tomato. This is one of the most persistent pieces of bad gardening advice online.

Be patient with it. Soil amendments act over weeks, not days.

The good news about first fruits

Blossom end rot very often hits the first flush of fruit and then stops on its own as the plant's root system matures and gets better at regulating uptake. If the first two tomatoes rot at the bottom and the rest come in clean, your plant sorted itself out — nothing further needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is blossom end rot contagious to my other plants?

No. It isn't caused by any organism — it's a calcium transport problem inside the individual plant, so it can't spread. If multiple plants show it at once, that's because they share the same watering conditions, not because it passed between them.

Can I still eat a tomato with blossom end rot?

Yes. Cut away the dark leathery portion and the rest of the fruit is safe to eat, assuming no secondary mould has set in on the damaged area. It's a cosmetic and structural problem, not a toxicity one.

Does adding eggshells to the soil fix blossom end rot?

Barely, and far too slowly to save a current crop. Eggshells are mostly calcium carbonate but break down over many months to years in soil. If you've already got a fruiting plant showing symptoms, fixing your watering and mulching will do vastly more than eggshells.

Why do only some fruits on the same plant get it?

Because each fruit's fate depends on the conditions during its own critical early development window. A fruit that formed during a dry spell can rot while one that formed a week later, after you'd watered consistently, comes out perfect.

If your small fruits are blackening at the bottom, don't buy a spray. Check whether your pots are swinging between bone-dry and soaked, put a layer of mulch on the soil surface, back off the nitrogen while fruit is setting, and pull the damaged fruits so the plant stops investing in them.
