There are two completely different problems people describe with the same sentence — "my plant isn't fruiting" — and they have opposite solutions. Work out which one you have before changing anything.
Problem A: the plant barely flowers at all. Lots of healthy leaves, few or no flower buds.
Problem B: the plant flowers heavily, then the flowers yellow and drop off without setting fruit.
If you have Problem A, you have a nutrition and light issue. If you have Problem B — which is far more common on balconies and terraces — you have a pollination or stress issue, and adding more fertiliser will do nothing.
Problem A: not enough flowers
Three causes, in order of likelihood.
Too much nitrogen. Covered in detail in our guide on what to actually feed your vegetable plants, but the short version: nitrogen instructs the plant to build leaves. Keep feeding it nitrogen and it will keep obeying, indefinitely. Switch to a potassium-leaning feed once the plant is established and it will redirect into flowering within a few weeks.
Not enough direct sun. Fruiting vegetables are demanding here — tomato, brinjal, chilli, and okra want a genuine 6+ hours of direct sunlight. Not bright shade. Not two hours of sun and eight of ambient light. A balcony that gets three hours of direct sun can grow excellent leafy greens and will always disappoint you with tomatoes.
Before blaming anything else, sit and actually watch where the sun falls on that spot through a day. Most people substantially overestimate how much direct sun a given corner gets.
The plant is simply too young. Some vigour and patience is required — a plant that's still building frame won't flower yet.
Problem B: flowers drop without setting fruit
This is the frustrating one, and pollination is the usual culprit.
Tomato, brinjal, and chilli flowers are self-fertile — each flower contains both parts and can pollinate itself — but the pollen still has to physically move, and it's shaken loose by wind and by bees. On an enclosed balcony with still air and few insects, that movement never happens. The flower opens, isn't pollinated, and is discarded.
Pumpkin, gourds, and cucumbers work completely differently. These carry separate male and female flowers on the same plant, and pollen must physically travel between them. A female flower is easy to spot — it has a tiny immature fruit at its base, behind the petals. If those tiny fruits keep yellowing and dropping, pollination failed.

To hand-pollinate: pick a male flower, strip its petals, and dab its pollen-covered centre directly onto the centre of an open female flower. Early morning is best — many of these flowers only stay receptive for a few hours.
Erratic watering causes drop too. A plant that dries out badly will abandon flowers and fruit to protect itself — the same underlying problem behind fruits blackening at the bottom.
Potassium-Rich Bloom Fertiliser (NPK 13-27-27 or similar)
Worth having once flowering starts, but only genuinely helps Problem A — a plant that won't flower because it's been overfed nitrogen. It will not fix flower drop caused by poor pollination, which is the more common issue on balconies.

- Reliably shifts an over-leafy plant into flowering within a few weeks
- Small quantities last a long time, so cost per season is low
- Useful across most fruiting vegetables, not just one crop
Cons
- Does nothing for flower drop from failed pollination — the most common cause
- Easy to overdo with synthetic NPK; measure rather than eyeball it
- Not a substitute for adequate direct sunlight
Pruning: helping the plant choose
A plant has finite resources. Pruning is how you decide where they go.
For indeterminate tomatoes (the tall vining sort that keep growing), pinch out the "suckers" — the shoots that emerge in the V between the main stem and a branch. Left alone they become entire secondary stems competing for the same resources. Removing them channels energy into fruit on the main stem. Do this while they're small.
Remove the lowest leaves that touch or nearly touch the soil. They contribute little and are the primary entry route for soil-borne fungal disease splashing up during watering.
Don't overdo it — leaves are the plant's food factory. Strip too many and you starve the fruit you were trying to feed. If you're unsure, remove less.
The harvesting trick most people miss
Pick fruit promptly as it ripens. A plant's biological objective is producing viable seed, not feeding you. Once fruit fully ripens and sits on the plant, the plant reads that as "job done" and slows or stops flowering.
Harvesting continuously keeps it trying. This applies strongly to okra, beans, chilli, and cucumbers — leave a few pods to fully mature and production drops noticeably. Regular picking genuinely extends the productive season by weeks.

Why do my tomato flowers fall off without making fruit?
Most often failed pollination — tomato flowers are self-fertile but need physical vibration to shed pollen, which still air on a balcony doesn't provide. Flick each open flower daily mid-morning. Sustained temperatures above about 35°C also make tomato pollen non-viable, causing drop regardless of care.
How do I hand-pollinate pumpkin and gourd plants?
Identify a female flower by the tiny immature fruit at its base. Pick a male flower, remove its petals, and dab its pollen-bearing centre onto the centre of the open female flower. Do it early morning, when the flowers are receptive.
Does removing leaves increase fruiting?
Only in moderation. Removing tomato suckers and the lowest soil-touching leaves redirects energy toward fruit and reduces disease risk. Beyond that, leaves are how the plant produces the sugars that fill fruit — heavy defoliation reduces yield rather than improving it.
My plant has lots of leaves but no flowers at all. What now?
Stop nitrogen-heavy feeding and switch to a potassium-leaning fertiliser, then confirm the plant genuinely receives 6+ hours of direct sun. Excess nitrogen and insufficient light are the two dominant causes, and no product compensates for too little sun.
The short version
Diagnose first. Few flowers means too much nitrogen or too little sun. Flowers that drop means pollination failure, heat, or erratic watering — and on a still balcony, flicking your flowers daily will do more than anything you can buy. Then keep picking ripe fruit so the plant never decides it's finished.
